This is going to be my last rave about Basterds. I promise.*
Paste’s review of the film (it’s quite good) ends with the reviewer commenting on Tarantino’s works overall, and noting how his movies finish. To avoid spoilers, I quote just the end:
“But choosing such moments to end his various romps is partly what keeps his films from being masterpieces. [...]

Audacious.
That’s the word that I came up with when someone asked me to ’sum up’ Inglourious Basterds.
I didn’t tell them that word; I think I mentioned ‘gorgeous,’ ‘intense,’ ‘brilliant,’ and ‘go immediately.’
But the more I think about it, the more audacious is perfect.
What kind of ridiculously prideful, arrogant director would think he could get away with obscure references, [...]

Qu’avez-vous dit ?
Foreign movies.
Seriously, why do other countries even bother? Hollywood can produce anything worth watching, with better, smarter, better-looking actors. English is the only important language anyways. Have you ever seen a foreign rip-off of an American movie? Why did we need a movie about some samurai when we can just make The Magnificent Seven? And it’s three [...]

No movie is perfect. But some have the semblance of perfection.
I look forward to a lot of movies, butfor months I’ve been achingly anticipating three films in particular. I then saw the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, and my infatuations were fixated upon (500) Days and Basterds.
(500) Days was beautiful, and I think it will remain a favorite among hundreds. But if I loved (500) [...]

It amuses me (that) they ryhme with ‘guppie’
The premise of yuppies (and scuppies) bother me not so much as their manifestations of shallow taste.
By which I mean, their proclivities for participating in indie and culturally significant (cultificant) activities simply because they are such. And then laughing at all the wrong times.
I recently saw (500) Days of Summer. Which, incidentally, was brilliant. But [...]

I Don’t Think. I Know.
I watched a movie tonight, and I have an irrational sensation I need to defend this choice. Why this movie, why now?
Some random acquaintance of my parents made a ridiculous comment about my person. I asked a friend of mine with a penchant for honesty and attention to detail if it were true. She denied [...]

A Demmed Good Movie
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a novel written by Baroness Emmuska Orczy in 1905. Critics have not been particularily kind to it, but the public loved it, and its author became rich and famous and wrote plenty of follow-ups to satiate the public. (This does not qualify as ’selling out,’ see also Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.)
Something similar [...]

If I Weren’t A Rich Man
Say I had a cash flow which was significantly smaller than my desire for enrichment through music, movies, books, and various other media.
What would I do in this theoretical situation?
I could make multiple visits to the library.
I could share my purchased acquisitions with friends – here, have a stack of cds/books/movies, bring them back when [...]

All In All It’s Just Another Movie On The Wall
I stumbled over Brick a couple years ago on a movie store shelf. It had me at Dashiell Hammett-esque, then threw in Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a Sundance Film Festival award for good measure. And Rian Johnson starring as my hero.
I’m not sure how to explain this movie. The closest I can get would be to ask if you’ve ever watched [...]

Assurance
We are often more confident in our opinions than we are in facts.
Doubt is a good movie.
I saw Doubt in the theater, soon after it opened. Usually I wait to see movies like this on DVD, or at least once the tickets are discounted and showings have dwindled. I like to be sure of my audience: if [...]
