So Many Movies . . .

When I made my manifesto that I would be covering culture for a month, I knew it was a big undertaking, but it has grown like The Blob. Picking just a few classic movies is impossible, so I find myself breaking everything down into smaller and smaller categories. I was going to do drama, romance/romantic comedy, suspense, musical, fantasy, and maybe one or two more. I find myself needing to do Bond, romantic comedy, courtroom, Western, romantic non-comedy, noir, ‘thinkers,’ plays on screen, and quite possibly multiple entries in multiple categories. Eventually I will point towards some people who you should google so you can watch all of their movies, and that’s only the beginning.

It’s a default setting (of my brain at least) to approach everything from a personal point of view; my time period, my ideas, etc. Over time I’ve figured out how to reset the setting so I can consciously approach from the right perspective.

Looking back over my posts, I’m already seeing the wide variety. If you take any of my suggestions I give out this month (and I’d be honored), remember to keep things in context. It is always going to make a difference when the book was written, or when the movie came out, or what sort of reception the music got, and what was going on in the world and other media at the time.

Watching some of the films from a 2008 point of view, some have aged well and some have deteriorated. To consider where they’re coming from, what the intent was, and what impact they had then and have now is always fascinating and makes the process more, not less, enjoyable for me. As I hope it is for you.

Salud.

I think what you’re doing is great with the whole culture review over the month is great. Wish I had the patience and ability to do it. Keep up the entertainment ;)
